Entrepreneurship

The subject of entrepreneurship has been gaining much attention in the last several years, particularly because it is perceived politically as a good route to create jobs and businesses with high added value. This is particularly relevant at a time where economic growth is generally slowed down, which has lead to an increase in the unemployment rate.

According to the European Commission, entrepreneurship could be defined as:
“... the ability of an individual to turn ideas into action. This includes creativity, innovation and risk taking capacity, as well as the ability to plan and manage projects in order to reach the goals….it should include the concern for ethical values and the promotion of good governance.” (European Communities, 2007).
Entrepreneurship is recognized by the European Commission as being one of the key-skills of Europe, contributing not only for socio-economic development, but also for a wider civic contribution (Redford, 2013). The knowledge and the necessary capacities needed to develop entrepreneurship are associated with the ability to identify opportunities at a personal, professional and business level. The entrepreneur should be conscious of the ethical position which companies should adopt as well as the role that they have in implementing sustainable businesses.

An entrepreneurial attitude is characterized by having initiative, pro activity, independence, innovation and creativity and for its ability to negotiate and plan the various activities associated with a business. An entrepreneur is a person that faces the flaws in his projects and considers them as constant lessons that allow him to further improve and perfect his business model. An entrepreneurial society is one that respects the flaws and encourages new ideas and new businesses.

The Platform for Education and Entrepreneurship in Portugal (PEEP) deals precisely with the goal of promoting a new culture of entrepreneurship, and as such constitutes itself as an organization of national reference on these issues.
